Volunteer Opportunities

Schaumburg Township is grateful to the many volunteers who dedicate their time and talent to support our residents. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the corresponding staffer listed below, or submit the online application and someone will reach out to discuss opportunities.

 

Disability & Senior Services

Township of Schaumburg Disability & Senior Services assists residents over the age of 55. They offer person-specific referrals, resources, information and more. Disability & Senior Services also encourages independence and enrichment through engaging programming like drop-in activities, day trips, educational workshops and special events.

Interested volunteers should call 847-285-4541 for more information.

Volunteers are needed for:

  • Class instructor or Program Leader

  • Special Event Assistance

Welfare Services

Food Pantry Volunteer

Description of duties: Check dates, sort and stock donated food items (fresh and shelf-stable), stock pantry shelves, assist with incoming donations, miscellaneous tasks.

Skills needed: The ability to stand, walk, bend, lift light weight, push, pull, and carry items. Ability to uphold client confidentiality. Ability to uphold sanitation guidelines. A friendly, courteous personality is a must.

Hours: Monday – Friday, 8-5pm (minimum of 2 hours at a time)

 

Food Pantry Driver

Description of duties: Drive the pantry vehicle to various retailers on behalf of the Township food pantry, load donations into the vehicle, unload donations at the food pantry.

Skills needed: Good driving record. Ability to communicate with community partners in a professional manner. The ability to stand, walk, bend, lift (up to 75 pounds), push, pull and carry items. Ability to uphold client confidentiality. Ability to uphold sanitation guidelines. Having a non-CDL Class C driver’s license or the willingness to be trained is a bonus. Drug test and physical may be required.

Hours: Monday – Friday, 9-12pm

 

Clerical Work

Description of duties: Answer phones, retrieve voicemails and return calls, schedule appointments, complete brief client intake, data entry, organizing and filing.

Skills needed: The ability to speak on the phone or in person with clients, donors and residents; ability to enter data into computer systems; ability to uphold client confidentiality. A friendly, courteous personality is a must. Bilingual in Spanish, Russian or Ukrainian also a plus.

Hours: Monday – Friday, 8-5pm (minimum of 2 hours at a time)

 

Life Skills Educator

Description of duties: Share your knowledge of budgeting, financial wellness, employment services or more.

Skills needed: Credentials in a relevant field may be required. Ability to speak to individuals in a group setting or one on one. Ability to uphold client confidentiality. A friendly, courteous personality is a must. Bilingual in Spanish, Russian or Ukrainian is a plus.

Hours: Varies based on individual and client availability.

 

Special Events

Description of duties: Varies by event.

Current special events include:

  • Letter Carriers’ Food Drive – 2nd Saturday each May
  • Pack the Bus – 1st Saturday in August
  • Holiday programs – December

Welfare Services Group Opportunities

Food Drives

Large groups are encouraged to organize a food drive to benefit the food pantry. A list of accepted and most needed items will be shared with any interested group. Organize a food drive with your company, family or neighbors!

In-person Group Volunteer Event

The Township of Schaumburg is looking for groups to help fight hunger in our community. Give back, build team spirit and learn about local resources all while supporting our food insecure neighbors with the essentials needed for nourishment.

Volunteer Details:

  • Who: Groups up to 12. All minors need to be accompanied by an adult.
  • What: Groups will pack 50 emergency food bags and learn about the Township’s self-select food pantry and other resources on a group tour.
  • Why: Emergency prepacked food bags are supplied when there is a need for food and a resident is unable to shop in the pantry. The emergency bags have essentials to last 1-2 days.
  • Time: 2-hour event scheduled between 9–4pm.
  • When: This volunteer opportunity is available every 2nd Wednesday of the month from January through October. Groups can commit to one or more months throughout the year.
  • Where: Township of Schaumburg – 1 Illinois Blvd. Hoffman Estates, 60169

Materials Needed:

Groups are encouraged to supply the following items to complete the 50 emergency bags. Company branded bags are welcome, or bags can be provided by the Township.

  • 50 cans of green beans
  • 50 cans of corn
  • 50 cans of fruit (any)
  • 50 cans of beans (any)
  • 50 cans of chili, beef stew or pasta meal
  • 50 cans of soup
  • 100 boxes of macaroni and cheese
  • 50 jars of peanut butter
  • 50 jars of jelly
  • 50 cans/jars of pasta sauce
  • 50 packages (bags or boxes) of pasta
  • 50 cans of canned meat (tuna, chicken, spam)
  • 50 pasta or rice meals (pasta roni or rice a roni)
  • 300 oatmeal packets
  • 50 bags or boxes of cereal

Committee Member

There are two committees which serve in an advisory capacity for the township: Disability & Senior Services Committee (DSSC) and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. Members serve a multi-year term and attend monthly meetings. Find information on each committee here.

Volunteer Agreement

To volunteer with the Township of Schaumburg you must:
- Provide a copy of your driver’s license or state ID
- Pass a background check (your social security number will be required)
