A community blood drive will take place on Thursday, September 18 from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Center of Elgin, Heritage Ballroom, 100 Symphony Way in Elgin. Hosted by iCU Community Organization, the American Red Cross, and the Schaumburg-Hoffman Estates Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the event will include music and snacks for participants.

The Township’s DEI Committee is encouraging residents to take part in this event as a way to support health equity and raise awareness about the need for diverse blood donors.

This drive is being held in recognition of Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness Month. Sickle cell is a serious genetic blood disorder that primarily affects Black and Brown communities and often requires regular blood transfusions as part of treatment. Because patients benefit most from blood that is closely matched to their own background, diverse donors are especially needed.

Every pint of blood can save up to three lives — and it only takes about an hour to make a difference. Learn more, register to donate or sign up to volunteer at icu-community.org/community.
