Schaumburg Township is proud to announce that Bilingual Social Services Caseworker Laura Barrera has been named the 2025 Caseworker of the Year by the Township Officials of Illinois (TOI). This honor recognizes outstanding dedication, compassion, and service to township residents across the state.

Although Laura was unable to attend the TOI Conference earlier this week, Supervisor Tim Heneghan and Associate Director of Welfare Services Barb McGinn proudly accepted the award on her behalf.

Tim expressed gratitude on behalf of Schaumburg Township, humbly accepting the recognition, and Barb shared how meaningful the award is to the entire team. She also read the words Laura prepared for the occasion:

“I am truly honored to be presented with this award. I’m grateful that my efforts to both our Township residents and my colleagues are noticed. Thank you to my team for providing guidance and support to get me to this point. I am proud to be a part of the amazing organization and team.”

Barb shared that when the Township presented Laura with her award in the office, they reflected on her many accomplishments and years of service. Laura’s reaction was simple yet heartfelt – “that’s impressive.” Barb added, “And it truly is impressive – to our residents, to our community, to the Township, and to her team.”

Laura joined Schaumburg Township as the bilingual caseworker in the Welfare Services Department and quickly made a lasting impact. Known for her deep knowledge of township services, compassion, and unwavering support for her clients, Laura consistently goes above and beyond to ensure residents feel seen, supported and empowered.

Her bilingual skills have been instrumental in helping residents overcome language barriers and access critical services. Whether assisting individuals in crisis, supporting team members with translation needs, or lending her time at community events, Laura approaches every situation with empathy and professionalism.

In addition to her casework, Laura took initiative by forming a notary work group at the Township to promote consistency and best practices across departments – a testament to her leadership and commitment to excellence.

In the nomination, Laura’s team said “she has a special way of bringing calm and reassurance to those she helps. She embodies what township service is all about – care, connection and community.”

Please join us in congratulating Laura Barrera, our 2025 Caseworker of the Year, for this well-deserved recognition and for her continued dedication to the residents of Schaumburg Township.
