Mental Health Awareness Month: More Good Days, Together

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to reflect, connect, and support one another. This year’s theme (from Mental Health America), More Good Days, Together, reminds us that mental health is deeply personal, yet something we all share. By taking small steps and looking out for one another, we can help create more good days for ourselves and our community.

Mental Health is Health

Mental health is just as important as physical health, and the two are closely connected. Sleep, stress, movement, nutrition, and existing health conditions all play a role in how we feel each day. Taking care of your whole self does not have to mean making big changes all at once. Small, manageable steps like getting enough rest, moving your body in ways you enjoy, or staying hydrated can make a meaningful difference over time.

Recognizing When Support May Be Needed

Not every “good day” looks the same. Sometimes stress, burnout, or depression can show up in subtle ways, like changes in sleep, appetite, energy levels or mood. Recognizing these signs in yourself or someone you care about is an important first step. Seeking support early can make a real difference, and you do not have to navigate it alone.

Starting the Conversation

Talking about mental health can feel difficult, but it can also be one of the most powerful ways to support someone. A simple check-in, asking how someone is doing, and listening without judgment can go a long way. Connection is an important part of well-being. Even small moments of conversation can reduce stress and help people feel less alone.

Finding the Right Support

Mental health journeys are different for everyone. What works for one person may not work for another, and that is okay. Finding the right path may take time, but support is available. The Township of Schaumburg funds local agencies that provide counseling, support groups, and a variety of services for residents. These organizations are here to help you find the support that fits your needs. In addition, the Township’s Mental Health Board has partnered with ReferralGPS, a free web-based service to help connect you with local mental health resources.

Everyday Ways to Support Your Well-Being

A “good day” does not have to mean everything is perfect. It might simply feel calm, manageable, or a little brighter than the day before. Simple, everyday habits can help support your mental health, including getting enough sleep, moving your body, eating nourishing foods, taking breaks to rest and recharge, practicing mindfulness, journaling or affirmations.

What Does a “Good Day” Look Like to You?

Part of building more good days starts with defining what that means for you. A good day could be productive, peaceful, social, or simply manageable. It may change over time, and that is okay. Taking time to reflect can help you better understand what supports your well-being and what you may need more of in your daily life.

Try these tools to get started:

Working Together for More Good Days

Having more good days is not something we achieve alone. Staying connected with others, checking in with friends and neighbors, and sharing meaningful moments can make a difference. Connection helps reduce stress and reminds us that we are not alone. Even small acts of kindness and support can have a lasting impact.
